Ebb and Flow explores the intersection between the river and the sea (the estuary) and the sky. Estuaries are the ephemeral features of the New Zealand coastline and are vulnerable to time and tide, erosion and the effects of human activity. A key concept within the work is the passing of time and the ephemeral nature of the environment at this intersect. The relationship of time and movement is explored through the utilisation of a pin hole, hand held exposures and digital capture. Marien (2012) suggests that the pinhole operates as a ‘natural camera,’ one that imitates how the eye sees. The images I wish to capture is not one of documentary photographs but the abstract experience of the location exploring it through a painterly aesthetic.
